There is so much justified fury in L.A. at the moment over Trump doing his best to turn protests into riots. The deportation of violent criminals is a difficult task. They are very effective at hiding in a crowd. Mums and dads, though, can easily be snatched up during a morning school run, which is a much more efficient way for Trump to provide results to his base. The spectacle of zip-tying undocumented individuals in front of spouses and children is gold for the president. Cruelty is the point. If you come here illegally, we will humiliate you in front of your children, traumatising them for life. A soulless but unambiguous message.

I travel this country a great deal for work and meet a great many people. All whom I meet are basically decent individuals who want a good life for their families. However, I also notice a darker side that is kept hidden (mostly) in person but flourishes on the relative anonymity of social media. Those on the Right have become obsessed (some rabidly) with doing everything they can to hurt the Left, even if it involves cutting off their nose to spite their face. The current bill moving through Congress will cut a Trillion Dollars in funding over the next ten years to programs many who voted MAGA rely upon. The Left, for its part, clutches its pearls and screams into the wind to no effect, with many cancelling anyone who does not share in their opinion. I promise you there is no greater a losing strategy than eating your own. With the president being above the law in the American system, it would have been a much more effective Democratic strategy for then President Biden to instruct the DOJ to arrest Trump – while a private citizen – for manslaughter and/or assault & battery over the death of 5 police officers due to the events he incited on January 6th. But the Dems have no balls… and that’s why I’m an Independent.

Yet, none of what is happening on the streets of L.A. is the main story. It is horribly painful, yes, but also a distraction from something far greater in scope that will mean very different lives for my children than the life I’ve led. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m mad about history. 2025 is BIGLY history in the making. Once a country spends more on servicing its debt than it does on defence, that is the beginning of the end of empire. We are there in the U.S. So, of course, the extremely wealthy in America will scramble to mop up what is left. The Big Beautiful Bill is designed to do just that. Next up… the end of the American Dollar as the world’s reserve currency. I never saw that happening in my lifetime, but it has been on the cards for some time.

We will come out the other end. I take heart at the end of the post WWII American-led order in which I so much believed, that the Commonwealth and European countries are pumping billions into their defence industries. I feel confident they will be prepared for the coming larger-scale wars of the 2030s, as despots try in vain to put the final nail in the coffin of democratic Western civilization. As for America… Britain is living proof that the retreat from empire can lead to wisdom and reconciliations. Better days will come. Just not tomorrow.
